People travel from near and far to hit the Gold Coast’s famously stunning beaches, and for good reason. Home to some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world, it’s the ultimate playground for families, couples on weekend getaways and domestic travellers chasing sunshine and salt air.

If you’re staying in one of the Gold Coast’s northern suburbs like Helensvale, you’re perfectly positioned to explore some of the very best beaches the Northern Gold Coast has to offer. The only tricky part? Narrowing down which ones to visit first!

The good news is there truly is a beach for everyone - whether you’re looking for calm, kid-friendly waters, a dog-friendly stretch of sand, a bustling tourist hotspot or a local hidden gem. And remember, the beach isn’t just for summer. The Gold Coast enjoys beautiful weather year-round, with even winter days offering warm sunshine and crisp ocean breezes.

Below, we’ve rounded up five of the best beaches near Helensvale, perfect for families, couples, and anyone visiting the Gold Coast’s famous theme parks.

Tip: See the Gold Coast City Council’s interactive beach map here, where you can filter beaches by facilities (dog-friendly areas, playgrounds, parking, you name it!) to help plan your day and find the perfect beach spot that ticks all your boxes.

1. The Spit (Main Beach)

Located near Sea World, The Spit is one of the most popular beaches on the Northern Gold Coast, and it’s easy to see why.

On the Broadwater side, you’ll find calmer swimming spots that are perfect for families with young children or those seeking a relaxed dip. On the ocean side, there’s plenty of space to stretch out on the sand and enjoy the sea breeze, and here is where you’ll find one of the coast’s top off-leash dog beaches. The Spit wraps around the coastline, making it a fantastic spot to watch boats and jet skis glide by, especially at sunset.

There are loads of great ways to spend the day here:

  • Grab a coffee, bite to eat, or ice cream from Seaway Kiosk

  • Set up a picnic along the rocks

  • Walk down the jetty for a fantastic photo opportunity or to cast a line from one of the best fishing spots around

  • Enjoy fresh seafood from Peter's Fish Market

  • Kick the footy or let the kids run free at Doug Jennings Park

2. Surfers Paradise Beach

A 25-minute drive from the holiday park will take you to the iconic shores of Surfers Paradise. This is the tourism hub of the Gold Coast, where high-rises meet the sea and the energy is always buzzing. The main beach access is via Cavill Avenue, and from there you’ll find a wide, golden stretch of sand backed by restaurants, cafés and bars along the esplanade.

Surfers is great for:

  • A classic Gold Coast beach day

  • Beach volleyball, tennis and foot volley (with poles and nets set up along the sand)

  • Evening strolls followed by dinner

  • The beachfront markets (held every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4 pm–9 pm)

It’s lively, fun, and perfect for couples on a weekend getaway or families wanting that quintessential Gold Coast experience.

Tucked along the Nerang River, Budds Beach offers calm, shallow waters that are ideal for young kids or those who prefer a swim without navigating unpredictable waves. It’s quieter than the main surf beaches but still has a relaxed buzz, popular with locals who know exactly how good it is.

The grassy stretch running parallel to the beach offers sheltered picnic areas and public barbecues, and across the road, you’ll find the charming Bumbles Cafe, perfect for a long brunch or coffee.

5. South Stradbroke Island

If you’re up for a more adventurous day, consider a day or half-day trip to South Stradbroke Island (or as the locals like to call it, Straddie). This unspoilt paradise feels a world away from the mainland, yet it’s just a short boat ride across the Broadwater.

The huge ever-changing dunes provide loads of fun alone, and the native bushland occupying the centre of the island offers great hiking opportunities. One of the most popular spots is Tipplers - a laid-back waterfront destination on South Straddie where you can relax by the calm, enclosed swimming area and enjoy a bite to eat in a beautiful natural setting. For ocean lovers, the island is also home to one of the best open beach breaks along Australia’s east coast.

With no cars on the island, South Stradbroke delivers a peaceful, back-to-nature experience - no traffic, no crowds, just wide-open beaches and fresh sea air. Access is easy via private boat, water taxi, boat hire, jet ski tour or local cruise vessel. You can catch ferry and water taxi services from several Gold Coast departure points, including Mariners Cove Marina in Main Beach, Runaway Bay Marina, and Hope Harbour Marina.

Keep in mind that the beaches are not patrolled, so always swim with caution.

Dog-friendly: No
Facilities:
Limited dining options
Access:
Approximately 30 minutes by boat from the mainland. Multiple ferry services are available with flexible departure points from various locations across the mainland. The Tipplers Ferry operates from Jacobs Well, servicing the northern end of South Stradbroke Island near the Tipplers Café precinct. Advance bookings are essential.
